AppLovin Bucks an S&P 500 Selloff as Revenue Jumps 55% and Buyback Authorization Expands
AppLovin reported $2.185 billion in third-quarter revenue, up 55%, and $1.439 billion of net income, up 72%. Its stock rose sharply during Thursday's broad S&P 500 decline, while a newly enlarged share-repurchase authorization underscored the stakes for investors.

One of the most unusual market contrasts on November 5 came from AppLovin. As the S&P 500 sold off sharply, shares of the advertising-technology company rallied following its third-quarter earnings release. The important story is not just the share-price divergence: AppLovin reported rapidly rising revenue and profit, a new multibillion-dollar share-repurchase authorization, and a demanding outlook for the next quarter.
Revenue rises 55%, while net income grows 72%
In results released on November 4, 2026, for the quarter ended September 30, AppLovin reported $2.185 billion in revenue, up from $1.405 billion a year earlier, a 55% increase. GAAP net income reached $1.439 billion, up from $836 million, a 72% increase. Diluted GAAP earnings per share were $4.30, compared with $2.45 in the year-earlier quarter.
Dividing reported net income by reported revenue gives a quarterly net margin of approximately 66%. This is a calculated ratio of GAAP figures, not the same as AppLovin's 84% adjusted EBITDA margin. The latter is a non-GAAP measure that adds back certain expenses; the two margins should not be treated as interchangeable.
A larger authorization is not the same as completed buybacks
AppLovin said its board approved a $3.2 billion increase in share-repurchase authorization, bringing the total authorization to $3.6 billion as of the end of October. That is permission to repurchase shares, not a declaration that $3.6 billion has already been spent or that the company must spend the entire amount.
During the third quarter, AppLovin said it repurchased or withheld 4.1 million Class A shares at an aggregate cost of $1.4 billion. Its calculation includes amounts associated with tax withholding when equity awards vested, so that figure should not be interpreted as open-market repurchases alone. The company also reported approximately $1.4 billion in quarterly free cash flow, using its own non-GAAP definition.
Why the stock stood apart on November 5
Associated Press reported that, by late morning U.S. Eastern time on Thursday, November 5, AppLovin had risen approximately 30% while the S&P 500 was down more than 3%. Those are intraday observations, not closing prices; the final session outcome could differ. The price action followed the release and took place amid a broader selloff in AI-linked shares. The timing is notable, but it does not establish that any single earnings metric caused the move.
AppLovin joined the S&P 500 on September 22, 2025, according to S&P Dow Jones Indices, and the TickerCanvas cached constituent check also identifies APP as an index member. The company's sharp divergence from the benchmark makes this an S&P 500 constituent story rather than a generic Nasdaq earnings item.
What comes next, and what remains uncertain
For the fourth quarter of 2026, management forecast revenue between $2.365 billion and $2.395 billion, with adjusted EBITDA of $1.995 billion to $2.025 billion and an adjusted EBITDA margin between 84% and 85%. These are company projections, not results. AppLovin did not provide comparable forward-looking GAAP measures or a GAAP reconciliation for adjusted EBITDA guidance, citing uncertainty in the reconciling items.
The key investor questions are whether sales growth and profitability can be maintained, how much of the expanded authorization will actually be used, and how advertising-market competition and customer demand affect future quarters. A striking intraday gain does not remove those uncertainties or predict the stock's next move.
