TickerCanvas FAQ: heatmaps, apps and automatic desktops
Answers about TickerCanvas indices, watchlists, data freshness, desktop wallpaper, saved views and mobile display mode.
What is TickerCanvas?
TickerCanvas is a customizable stock-market heatmap for the web, desktop and mobile screens. It presents shared market snapshots as company tiles, with selectable indices, sizing methods, colors, watchlists and saved views. Desktop features and native packages are labeled with their beta availability.
Can I switch between S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100?
Yes. Use Market index above the canvas. The views share quotes for common companies. Switching index clears selection filters so the new universe is visible, while preserving your appearance choices.
Is Nasdaq-100 part of S&P 500?
No. Their memberships overlap, but they are separate indices. Nasdaq-100 selects large non-financial companies listed on Nasdaq; S&P 500 selects large US companies across its own eligibility rules. A supported ticker may appear in one view or both.
Why can an index show more than 100 or 500 tiles?
An issuer can have more than one eligible share class. TickerCanvas displays included securities, so a company count and a ticker count need not match. The selected view shows its actual membership and coverage.
Are these real-time prices?
The current feed is cached end-of-day data. Read the trading session shown on the canvas. Client refreshes and visual animations do not turn the snapshot into a live exchange feed.
Does opening another screen create another data collection?
No. Browser and app clients read shared cached snapshots. Changing an index, opening another device or previewing an animation does not directly trigger a Marketstack collection.
How do I reset a company focus or other filters?
Use the prominent Reset filters button. It clears the ticker focus, custom selection, sectors, search and Top N limit for the selected index. Your index, theme, colors and sizing preference remain selected. Full market performs the same filter reset.
Can I add any ticker to a watchlist?
Custom watchlists select from the supported membership of the chosen index. Entering a symbol outside those memberships does not subscribe to a new stock or start an extra provider request.
What do tile size and color mean?
By default, size uses a dated company market-cap reference and color shows signed percentage change. You can choose gains, declines, absolute movement or equal area instead. Missing and very small weights retain a minimum visible size.
Why does a company have a price but no market-cap reference?
The two values come from different data inputs and can have different coverage. TickerCanvas marks an unavailable capitalization rather than inventing it. In market-cap mode, that company uses a minimum tile size.
How do I set an automatically updating desktop?
In the desktop app, use Set as desktop on this screen. It saves the current canvas for the monitor containing the app window and checks for changes every minute while the app runs. No manual PNG export is needed. Check the platform beta status before downloading.
Will the desktop keep updating after I close the window?
On macOS, the app remains available from its menu-bar item after the window closes. The Windows host keeps configured desktop views in its system tray. Quit stops automatic checks. The last successful wallpaper remains until changed or restored.
Does the desktop show continuously animated live prices?
No. It is a clean background image refreshed automatically when the saved canvas or shared snapshot changes. The current market feed is end-of-day data. Interactive animations belong to the app, not a continuous desktop video.
Can I restore my previous wallpaper?
Use Restore previous desktop in the desktop app. The integration keeps screen-specific restore records and stops the configured updates. Keep the original wallpaper file available so the operating system can load it again.
Can I use a tablet without replacing its home-screen wallpaper?
Yes. Use TickerCanvas in the foreground and enter display mode. Keep awake is optional and depends on device support. On iPad you can also add the website to the Home Screen from Safari. Mobile display mode does not replace the system wallpaper.
Where are my saved views stored?
Views and settings are local by default. On the website, Account offers optional email-code sign-in, cloud save and explicit review/load between browsers. Signing in does not overwrite a local canvas. Native beta apps retain local views and support export/import. Shared view links contain the selected settings and tickers.
Can I reduce motion or change the colors?
Yes. Customize contains themes, palettes, intensity, opacity and motion controls. Staggered updates can be disabled, and reduced-motion preferences are respected. The visual preview changes highlighting without generating new prices.
Is Pro available to purchase?
Customization is unlocked for beta testing. Payments and subscription rights are not active. Optional website accounts and explicit cloud save/load do not require a purchase. The planned Founder price is €9.99 per year, but subscriptions are not currently on sale.
How do email sign-in and newsletter consent work?
Account emails contain a single-use eight-digit access code that expires after 15 minutes. Enter it on the account page where you requested it. A code is tied to that browser request and allows at most five incorrect attempts. Signing in never subscribes you to product emails. The separate newsletter checkbox is off by default, saves a versioned consent record, and can be withdrawn from Account at any time. No newsletter campaign is scheduled yet.
Can I remove my cloud account?
Yes. Account lets you sign out on this device, sign out everywhere, or explicitly delete your account, cloud preferences and optional email consent. Local views remain on the device. Expired access records are cleaned up automatically and backup copies expire under the normal retention policy.
Are news updates active?
Not yet. News is separate from these product guides and FAQ. Automated news publishing remains inactive while its editorial engine and schedule are prepared.
Is this an official S&P or Nasdaq product?
No. TickerCanvas is an independent Premium ADV project and is not affiliated with or endorsed by either index provider. Index names identify the supported market universes; the respective owners retain their trademarks.
